There comes a time. . .

There comes a time in a young child's life when they see the movie The Black Stallion. For Annika, that day was yesterday.

When I was a young boy, my parents took me to a few movies, but none that I really remember. The first one we went to was about a family living in the snow. I think it was The Wilderness Family. That movie came out in 1975. Well, I don't remember too many other ones, but I do remember going to see The Black Stallion. That movie was great, but a little scary. In the beginning there was a fire on the ship and some fighting onboard. But the rest of the movie is great. Mickey Rooney is in it, and the horse is awesome. But the character I always loved was Alec, the boy. His character was great. He got to live on an island, ride this awesome black horse. . .I thought it was so cool. I probably even wanted freckles--I don't know. There was a Black Stallion book I owned that I spent a lot of time looking at, I can remember that much. Anyway. . . .so yesterday Annika saw the movie and she thought it was great. I put The Black Stallion Returns next on our NetFlix queue, and we'll watch it as soon as we get it.

This morning, it occurred to me that I should look up to see if the boy, Kelly Reno, had appeared in any other films. . .as it turns out, his story is pretty interesting.

Horse Power: The Black Stallion's Kelly Reno saddles up a big rig

It was enough to make any kid want to get shipwrecked. In the 1979 film The Black Stallion, 11-year-old Kelly Reno finds himself cast away on a desert island with a hot-tempered Arabian horse. Slowly the two make friends; soon enough, Reno is galloping bareback along the shore, yelping with delight.

Now, most days, Reno sits atop 325 horses -- that's the power under the hood of the kenworth 18-wheeler he drives throughout Colorado, hauling heavy construction equipment for Wagner Rental Company. "I'm a certified truck driver and very proud of that," says Reno, 35. "What bothers me is these people, when they do figure out who I am, the first thing out of ther mouths is, 'What the hell you doin' drivin' a truck?' I basically look at them and say 'You know what? It pays the bills.'"

His film work paid them for a short while. With no acting experience, Reno, whose mother had heard about an open audition for equine-minded boys like her son -- Reno had been riding horses on his parent' 10,000 -acre Colorado ranch since he'd learned to walk-- turned out to be "a natural" when he was cast in Stallion, says his costar Micky Rooney, 80. "He was so willing to try anything, and he was great with horses."

And willing to travel: Stallion was shot in Canada, Sardinia and the Italian mainland. "We went to places we never would have gone, stayed in fabulous hotels and did some fun things," says his mother, ruth, 58, whose husband, Bud, a cattle rancher who also accompanied their son on location, died in 1996. "But when we came home, we were still ranchers. He still had to do chorse like everybody else."

Though Reno was offered more roles, he took just a few, the most notable being an encore as Alec Ramsey in `983's Black Stallion Returns, shot in Morocco. His paychecks were a big perk, but, as he said to his mother when another localtion shoot was going to distrupt their family life, "there are a lot of things more important than money."

After graduating from highschool in 1984, Reno got a new agent and tried to make his way into acting again, but his plans were derailed by a near-fatal highway accident in 1985. His pickup truck was hit by an 18-wheeler, and Reno suffered two collapsed lungs, bruised kidneys and several broken bones, putting him in a wheelchair for eight months. (He still has a 14-in. steel plate in his left leg.) "I lost a couple of jobs over it," he says. "In eight months--Hollywood forgets you fast."

In the truck with him, but escapting serious injury, was girlfriend Lynette Tuttle, 32, whom he married in 1986 and with whom he hqas three children: Ryan, 12, Raelyn, 8, and Justin, 7. They divorced in `996, and a year later Reno met Annette Crump, 35, a nurse he wed in 1998. "We got married on horseback," says Reno, who lives with Annette and her son Jesse, 9, 15 miles from Lynette on a ranch near Pueblo, Colo.

After working as a cattle rancher for 15 years, Reno got his trucking license in 1996, graduating at the top of his class. He chose trucking because "the pay was good and I needed the work," he says. While he has toyed with the idea of trying to act again ("His eyes light up," says Annette, when he spots and old costar on TV), Reno isn't about to park his rig just yet. "I've been there, done that," says Reno, who is still asked for autographs on the street. "I have a loving wife and four lovely children, and I'm happy where I'm at." Besides, he says, "if I never do anything but be a truck driver, I can always tell my grandkids, 'Look what Grandpa did when he was little.'"

Here is a picture of Kelly Reno today. Google reports that someone of that name resides in Pueblo, Colorado: 1139 E Jaroso Dr, Pueblo, CO 81007. I am thinking of send him a letter and will report back here if I get a response.

Apparently his accident took the wind out of his sails, which is tragic.

We will always remember him fondly, and wish him the very best.

I am watching The Black Stallion at the moment. Brings back memories of when I first seen it as an adolescent in the 80's. Such a wonderdul film. I think Mr.Reno's life took a modest turn for the better. Maybe Hollywood would of taken the life out of him as it does to so many.
It seems to me his life as and rancher and trucker is more honorable and fullfilling. Good for him.He left a memorable token for himself and all who enjoyed these beautiful films.

I was watched The Black Stallion with my daugters. This movie was my favorite when I was 8. Now I watch with my kids, and they just loved it. Mr. Reno was very talented boy. We wish him all the best. Zsolt Toth, Hungary.

Francis Coppola was a genius, and Kelly Reno was the greatest. Favorite movie as a child--just rewatched with my teenagers. We all love this actor not to mention that horse! Agree with the above that Hollywood isn't all it's cut out to be. Family and friends are the joie de vivre.

I went to a Christian school with Kelly, he was like every other boy there, just went with the flow kinda guy! Very nice and humble, you would have never known he was a movie star! Glad to be able to see how is is doing, I've wondered about him through the years! Thank you writer!!

I borrowed a copy of The Black Stallion from my local library. I’m looking forward to watching it again after so many years.

Watching the movie again right now with my Mom, it's one of her favorites. Kelly Reno was stunning with that horse...

Just finished watching it and one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen! Kelly Reno was phenomenal and the horse a gorgeous creature. The choreography was stunning. The bond between the boy & horse was so powerful. After watching I immediately wanted to see what Kelly Reno was doing now and if he was still acting or actually involved with horses. He seemed to actually be doing all the riding in the movie. Can't wait to share with my grandchildren.

Hey! You probably won't see this because it was posted under 2 months after I was born. But Kelly is my uncle and we see him and Grandma Ruth all the time. I saw Ruth a few days ago. I think it's really cool that you liked the movie. We even have posters signed from some of the other people!

I know it was made on a movie set but I still cry every time I watch when they take alex off the island and the black swims with them..that shows the loving bond they had!

My all time favourite films - The Black Stallion & The Black Stallion Returns. Thank you for the many years of joy they brought to my life.

Just finished both of The Black films. They are good. First one is perfect. I'm very sorry about truck accident but that's a life. Best wishes Reno's family from Kyiv, Ukraine.

At first I was confused when I began reading because it’s 1 am and I just finished watching the movie for the first time, which means I was watching it yesterday and my name is Anikka. I had to read the beginning twice, thinking, “this is really weird”. But then I read the rest. Also, I am a truck driver with a kenworth truck and I ride Colorado, maybe I’ll see Reno Kelly one day now that I know to being looking out for him. Thank you for the update and pictures, I enjoyed it.

So I was flipping through the TV ...and came upon the end of this classic movie, one of my all-time favorites... I immediately clicked to the channel bc I'm drawn to this amazing, timeless story.

The movie was just about over, unfortunately ... it was where Alex rides The Black in the rain so some big shot in horse racing can clock this great horse's speed.

I'm always overwhelmed with emotion, like I was when I first watched the movie at 9 years old ... I believe my mom took us, me and my brothers, to see it at the theater... I mesmerized by the power of the story and the strong bond that forms between this boy and that stunningly beautiful horse ... and what personality! I wanted to be the one on The Black!

It's hard to put into words how this movie makes me feel, even now @ 50 years old! I've never stopped wanting a ranch and a horse if my own.

And seeing the movie so many years later led me here,to this page. I wanted to know if Kelly Reno was still alive, how old he was, how he was doing, what he now looked like etc. How amazing to see Kelly as a man, and still see the resemblance to boy in his face.!

How awful about Kelly's accident, but like someone else also wrote, it was probably a blessing in disguise, keeping him away from the corruption of Hollywood ... he remains as the 1 who rode The Black❤.

And I picture Kelly living a rich & wholesome life, with his wife on a ranch full of horses. It's nice to know more about him and I'm thinking of sending a letter to that address!

It's lovely to have stumbled upon this page and found so many other fans who enjoyed the film as much as I did. I watched it over and over as a kid in the 80s and it was one of my favourites. Now, 30 years on as a dad, I watched it for the first time since with my young children and the magic of the film came flooding back. My children were captivated by the film from start to finish. Such a masterpiece and Kelly Reno is an amazing talent, I was quite filled with emotion towards the end. I also feel like writing to him to thank him for the happy memories of this beautiful film. I hope that he is doing well and enjoying life, wherever that may be. Thank you!

Hello from Hungary!
A movie was made in Hungary in 1983. Brady's Escape (The Hungarian title was Hosszú vágta) Starring Kelly Reno and John Savage. And an amazing horse, of course.
This movie is about the love and protection of a man from another culture from the lowly horsemen of the plains in Hungary during World War II.
It’s a very good story and Kelly Reno is a very good actor. He is authentic in the role of the Hungarian csikos (wrangler) boy. I really like this movie.

That is really amazing! You're very lucky to have such a cool uncle! I mean, who in the world has ever ridden a horse the way he did... as a *child* no less... in those movies!? My heart is in my throat every time I watch those scenes! Timeless classics, hands down ~

Celeste Leon 4/22/2022 01:04:00 PM

I devoured those Black Stallion books in the 70s as a child and loved this movie! Oddly enough, I dreamt I was riding the Black (or a horse like him) and naturally, rewatched the movie after decades. It never disappoints, the cinematography on the island (where is that BTW?) is spectacular and the relationship between Alec, his magnificent horse, and the beloved trainer played by Mickie Ronnie (as well as the Black carriage driver) is nothing short of magical! A classic!!!

Superb, and timeless film. Don’t make them like that anymore. Kid is an amazing horse rider.
