Rochester Poetry Contest - My Late Entry

The Rochester Post Bulletin recently held a poetry contest. I didn't enter. Here is what I wrote though.

Born in Green Bay, once a resident of Duluth
I'm a transplant.
I find no big water.
Still, on a heavy night in November
out on my back porch
my children downstairs, my wife asleep,
I settle down and listen to the flap of geese and the thump of helicopter blades.
They crash over me like the water I miss so much.

I guess my comments on it now would be:

  • Kinda run-on in the middle.
  • I don't miss the water so much anymore.
  • The helicopter blades comes from the fact that the Mayo One helicopter often flies over our house.
  • As do the geese.
